im trying to install OOo 2.0 in WIN xp i got error message:: the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0539
choose ' close' to terminate the application.
and when i am trying to delete the file it says cannot delete OOo_21_0.0_Win32intel_install_wsjre: it is being used by another person or program
and i dont dont which program is that.......... 
pls help |

Because you've had a crash, the program has not terminated gracefully. One of the things that come from this is the Operating System is not notified that the install program is no longer using the file.
(If anyone wants to point out all the things that are wrong with that explanation - feel free)
To fix:
- Power your PC down (probably Log Off then Log On again would be enough - but I learnt in Win 3.11 that was usually a waste of time)
- Power up and Log On to an account with Administrator privileges
You should then be able to delete the file.
Rather than delete the file, try a System Restore - you did make sure a restore point was created before installing the software, didn't you? That should clean up some of the temp files and registry entries (if any) created before the crash.
Do you still want to install OO.o? If so, is that the install file you're trying to delete? (It should have a .exe extension)

It seems like it could be a corrupt download file-- I would probably try downloading again before doing the new installation.
I hope the restore point worked out for you.

You can verify the integrity of a download by checking its MD5 sum. Instructions at www.openoffice.org on this page.

| You have not even tried the system restore. Why not? otherwise you would have seen that automatic system restore points are created by XP. You only have to remember when you installed OOo. Reformatting the whole PC is far more laborious. |

Don't reformat. It will probably fix your problem, but there should be an easier way.

Is this an opinion? Did you check the md5 sum? Files get corrupted, that's a fact of life.

Are there four of these files or is that a typing error?
Seeing 4 instances of the same file name in the same folder would indicate that you have an XP problem that needs fixing before any other software issues can be addressed.
It still won't delete after a cold reboot?
Possibly it's not on the desktop that you think it is on. If you have multiple user profiles on your PC it could be on the "All Users" desktop (Documents and Settings\All UIsers\Desktop - from memory). Open a Windows Explorer window, navigate to the All Users desktop and delete the file from there. You will need Administrator permissions.
If that is not the problem, it again indicates something wrong with XP. Are you getting messages to the effect that OOo_21.0.0_Win32Intel_install.exe is read only, or a system file, or ... ? Are you running software in the background that protects against accidental deletion?
If you delete this file, you will have to download it again to install OO.o.

The date you really want to restore to is the latest restore point before this problem started.
Just be aware: When you restore your system, you effectively roll it back to whatever state it was in at the time the restore point was created. Your data files should be OK, but any software you've installed, or changes you've made to the registry, since then will be reversed. (You do get the chance to UNDO the restore if you don't like the way it worked out)

That's the point you need to restore to. Have you tried it? Can you now delete OOo_21.0.0_Win32Intel_install.exe?

The date and item you have to click for restore is the date and item that speaks about the installation of a certain software. If you take the courage and click on it, the next screen (or at least one of the following screens) will inform you that the system will be restored to the point before installig the software in question.
You may find more than one restoration points on any given day and there are several days when there is no restoration point at all. |
