see terminal output below. The failed dependencies were obtained after operating mc, opening the folder that apparently can't be found and running the rpm (which fails). Back to version 1.

It looks as though you tried to run one rpm. Run the whole lot together (except for desktop-integration which, evidently, you should run afterwards) with the command suggested in the Setup Guide: rpm -Uvh *rpm That overcomes those annoying dependency issues.
I've never used the ls command but it may depend on the system database being updated with updatedb. |

Note that the folder the rpms cannnot be accssed using the command cd !!!
The program mc reveals the files to exist on my hard disk, so I now download was successful.
Of course, windows users do not have to experience this classic linux installation hell... _________________ rene

You can't cd into a directory? Is this because you extracted as root? Extract the files as a standard user, then cd into the directory, then run RPM.

I would disagree as the installation process takes far less user input and uses standard package management techniques. _________________ Arch Linux

Thanks for the advice, but no success yet. I have never experienced this occurrence before. Does anyone know why?
[r@localhost r]$ cd /usr/local/openoffice
[r@localhost openoffice]$ ls ./
OOA680_m1_native_packed-1_en-US.8990/ OOo_2.0.1_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz
[r@localhost openoffice]$ cd ./OOA680_ml_native_packed-1_en-US.8990
bash: cd: ./OOA680_ml_native_packed-1_en-US.8990: No such file or directory
[r@localhost openoffice]$ cd ./OOA680_ml_native_packed-1_en-US.8990/
bash: cd: ./OOA680_ml_native_packed-1_en-US.8990/: No such file or directory

Your cd command does not use the correct directory name. Your ls gives you m1 and your cd uses ml:
OOA680_m1_native_packed-1_en-US.8990
OOA680_ml_native_packed-1_en-US.8990

Thanks eagle eyes, problem solved.
Wouldn't it be better for the rpm command intruction to be included in a "readme" file. I'm not au fait with rpm.
Nice that version 2 recognises ibm java... _________________ rene

It is included in the user guide. I am of teh opinion that if you have a package management system them you should use it and know how to. Most fo teh complaints about the move to RPM have been because people don't know how to use it or any related system. _________________ Arch Linux

I take your point about readme files. I only downloaded the Setup Guide by mistake and then forgot to read it.
To get the lowdown on rpm, use "man rpm". In my case, I had to combine the manual with an extensive use of trial, error and colourful language. |

I think it is un-realistic to expect users to remember by heart a command such as "rpm -Uvh *rpm" in this case. Sure, users, should learn how to use a package management system, but it is unlikely that users will learn all commands.
As an analogy, when you learn to speak a new language, do you refuse to utter a single word until you have reached complete fluency, or do you gain new knowledge as you make progress? _________________ rene
