I'm considering switching to Open Office and I have one question left before I make my decision:

Can Writer (or any program in the suite) read PDFs? I don't need to edit anything, I would just like to know if any of the programs in the suite read PDFs.

It all depends on what you mean by 'read.'

In Writer, the wordprocessing module, I was just able to use Insert > Object > OLE Object and select a 250-page nVidia manual in PDF.

It appears as a small thumbnail in the document. Double-clicking it or right-click > Open spawns Adobe Reader and there it all is...

If you mean, does Writer tuck a PDF full-size into a frame, readable without opening Adobe Reader, I don't think so.

EDIT: of course, you could painstakingly screen-capture each page of the PDF and insert it as a graphic.

This would get old very quickly with the 250-pp. manual...

It won't read PDF's. That is what PDF reader software is for and there is more to PDF software than Adobe.

No, but you can try KOffice from the KDE project on Linux:

I use Foxit freeware reader. It has some nice options including "typewriter". You can add tex ...not to the document, but essentially to the temp view for pinting to paper. I haven't tried printing to a new PDF, but don't see why yhta wouldn't work either.
