Why is OpenOffice concidered "useless" for these Font needs?

Dear Harald,
thanks for your e-mail.
Firstly, TibetDoc and TibetD Reader are c applications that are custom coded for Windows. The small size of the Mac and Unix user-base for these applications makes it prohibitively expensive to do the same coding for either of these platforms.
Secondly, we have a version of TibetD Reader that has been coded for the Macintosh and which will run on Windows and Unix/Linux. We make this available for the Mac platform at the moment. Perhaps we will make it available as a single, cross-platform solution later.
The assignment of fonts and characters is controlled in *all* of the programs internally. It has to be that way. We have investigated Open Office as a potential solution. We found it to be useless for our needs. Therefore, we do not support nor recommend Open Office.
Yours,
Tony Duff

Can you explain what the issue is here? The letter really doesn't give enough explanation. _________________ Arch Linux

To Leo:
I understand that you need an application for using tibetan Language (probably in Linux, from PKTC answer).
PKTC seems to be a company that produces such software (TibetDoc) for windows
http://www.tibet.dk/tcc/
I'm not sure if such a company is interested in having OpenOffice as a "competitor".
One os this Forum's "SUPER-USERS" is Bhikkhu Pesala. I suspect that when he notices your post, he will give you an authoritative feedback on Tibetan issues... _________________ "Do one thing every day that scares you" |

Pāli is the scriptural language of Buddhism.
We use letters with diacritics (accents) like āīūḍḷṃṇṅṭ for writling Pāḷi in Latin script. Pāḷi has no script of its own, but can be transliterated into other scripts such as Burmese, Thai, or Roman (latin) scripts. The teachings were handed down by Oral transmission for several hundred years, first being recorded on palm leaves in Sri Lanka, in Sinhala script. This is modern Sinhala:
This is Tibetan script:
Unicode allow users to type in most scripts if they have the right font. I don't understand the issues about Tibetan nor why Open Office is unsuitable for their project. _________________ Fonts * Opera * Oo Tips * FAQ * New Forum

I've checked some info from PKTC:
http://www.tibet.dk/tcc/download/50wdmanual.zip
For me, "characters" of Pāli an Tibetan don't look very different. Well, Italian, Russian and Icelandic must look similar to other people...
If you bother checking this link, you will find, on page 83(84) some flourishes, like "initial ornaments"
Is there the same concept in Pāli ?
I find those "characters" very pleasing, from the typographical point of view. I think it it very appealing the idea of using, in western texts, "swashes" that can have a "hidden" meaning.
Post EDIT: I'm sorry: I missed the actual Pāli text on your post. (is quite small) .The two languages are, in fact, very different ! _________________ "Do one thing every day that scares you" |
