I got this doc in an email from work. I click on it, Writer starts then crashes, giving me the Document Recovery Screen. I click to recover and it says that recovery was sucessfull. A second window opens up with the document's name stating that it will recover the file ??? and it will lauch automatically. I click okay and whole process repeats itself. I finally figured out to uncheck the launch open office box to stop the process.

I've opened many a document before without a hitch. Actually, this is the first problem I've encountered. Any ideas?

It could be most anything Sad Probably the first thing to try is to down load the file and see if you can open it from within OOo. Or with anything else for that matter. It could just be a corrupt file.

What fomat is the document in? If it is a MS Word document it should open but if it is say MS Works then it will not.

What OS and OOo version are you using?

My version of OpenOffice is 2.0
The file extension is Doc and no one at work uses Works.
I've tried different ways of opening the file - by directly clicking on it or first opening Writer and then opening it from there. All give the same result.
The file isn't very important. I just want to make sure that it's an isolated case and not a malaise of Writer.

Since, this is a .doc file, try opening it in MS Word or MS Word Viewer or even WordPad. If these don't open it, then look no further. The file is corrupt.

Just downloaded and installed the Word 2003 viewer from the Microsoft site.
It opens the document without a problem. I can post the doc for anyone to download and examine. Just let me know.

I had to use a third party file host but here it is:

http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=49695
Click the little "Download" box.

I scanned the file prior to uploading so it should be cootie free!

It is not a MS Word document, but a RTF (Rich Text Format) document.

OOo was never very good at importing or saving RTF files. Someone saved a RTF file as a .doc file, I guess.

Thank you all for your assistance. I never thought that someone would change the extention of a file. I'll have a "Word" with the person. (Ouch!) Wink

One of the "Save As" options in Word is Word 97-2003 & 6.0/95 - RTF (*.doc) which is an RTF file with the .doc extension. I think this format is used for compatibility with Word 6.0/95.
