Iam thoroughly confused reading the site.
Does OpenOffice run on the Mac Intel-based iMac running Tiger or not? I find a page talking about "these builds" only running on PwerPC, suggesting there is a build runniing on the Intel. Link points to a whole bunch of files somewhere else but no guidance on what to do, how to do it etc etc etc etc etc, all the things you would expect to be there, really frustrating.
So, can someone assist and tell me what the story is?

yes, there are builds that run on Intel. THe most current is 2.0.2 RC4, found here:
ftp://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/2.0.2rc4
Make sure the file you download has both "Intel" and your preferred language ("en-US" for english, for example) in the title. also you will need to install X11, which is on your Tiger DVD (install X11User.pkg)
hope that helps,

Many thanks, very helpful, got the download and it seems to work.
One weird thing though, when you open the OpenOffice logo from Dock, it opens the Writer. however there seems to be no menu item for opening eg the spreadsheet, the only way I found being to drop an existing spreadsheet document onto the program. For various reasons too tedious to explore this is seriously inconvenient, I really need to be able to open the spread and then open a file that actually resides on the network, on a pc.
Anyone know how this is done?

to open the other programs, you select the 'new' menu, there you will file options for the other types.

Thanks, very helpful.
All I need now is to figure out how to get an Excel spreadsheet off a Windows pc on the same network to work on.
You wouldn't happen to know how that is done? I don't want to copy it from where it is, it has to stay, just work on it on the Mac.
In any event, thanks for your kind help

this one is a hard one. unfortunatly the network access of OO.o X11 is not so hot. if i have been following the developers correctly there are fixes for this comming, but they are not all here yet. Some network connections work though, so try it...
I would try to open the file over the network. I'd suggest going to the computer through the finder and opening the file, rather than trying to open it through the 'open' dialogue. |
