|
|
The next few months I am outta town, using modem an hour a day on my laptop.
Downloading big programs, especially OOo, is almost impossible under thesecondition. So, I would like to use a tiny downloader of some sort, a downloader or whatever that can help me download programs like the newly released Inkscape 0.44 in "pieces"; I need the to be able to resume a download.
I dont need anything fancy, just the feature itself. Do you know about some software, free and open source if possible, that does the tricks?

An ftp client like the excellent open source Fillezilla allows you to stop and resume.
Alternatively, you could try downloading using bittorrent. Bittorrent graps little pieces here and there from other people that are also downlaoding. If there are sufficient "peers", this way of downloading could be the fastest under your circumstances because nearby, fast sources are being used used. You just load the client during startup, forget about it and it automatically and safely stops when you shut your computer down - or drop your network connection.
OOo is officially being distributed using peer 2 peer networks. One of the links on the download site of OOo (Download OOo via P2P) takes you to you go to http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/index.html. There you will download a small fille ending with the extension .torrent. This is a "metafile" that tells your bittorrent client where and how to retrieve the file.
For bittorrent, there are many free and open source clients. I am familiar with Azureus. Either way, under your conditions, you inevitably will have to be patient. If you manage to get a steady download rate of 4 to 5 K, which probably would be already good under your conditions, it will take at least 4 to 5 hours to download OOo. |

Okay, thanks.
What about resume for downloads from hyperlinks (HTTP) ? I really need that more than anything, and I remember some downloaders could once. Perhaps there is an extension for Firefox than can do that? _________________ www.kaaredyret.dk - OpenOffice resources (templates, extensions, tutorials and more) !

| Opera's built-in download manager will resume downloads. I always use it when downloading OOo and usually have to stop and resume the downloads several times. |
