Hello:
I am currently running ver 2.0.2. Is it recommended to upgrade to 2.0.3, and if so, should I uninstall 2.0.2 before installing new upgrade version 2.0.3
Thanks !!!

| My practice is to just install, let the installer detect the old version and install over it. Some others always remove the old version first but I've never had a problem doing my way. |

I had a couple of problems installing over the 2.0 beta versions, but I haven't had any problems installing over the officially released versions. I say, go ahead and install it. _________________ Laugh at life or life will laugh at you. |

It is good to know that you can safely upgrade; I, however, always uninstalled the previous version first. Your personal settings are kept, 100% as far as I can see, so I just wanted to play safe.
I am right; all personal settings are not deleted when you uninstall?

I always uninstall before installing the new version. In the case of OOo, I also clean the Registry before installing the new version, because OOo seems to generate a large number of Registry entries.
After I uninstalled 2.0.2, I checked the Registry for "OpenOffice" entries with Registry First Aid, and it found 963 (!) entries, which I deleted. The Registry size decreased by 3% after I compressed it with NTREGOPT. |

I just upgraded from 2.02 to 2.03 on Windows XP. The install went perfectly smooth and it removed the old files and installed the new ones fine.
I also recommend turning off your Virus progs and SpySweeper etc. during installs.
Upgrade went fine. Only thing I've noticed is when you right click on the lower bottom right Open Office App Quickstarter icon the avatars are there to launch each program, but the text that used to be next to each icon is blank. Must be a little bug in the upgrade.
And when I did the registration the text was blank on the Next key. I knew it was the next key so you could still click it ok.
Other than that all is fine. _________________ http://www.BigTicketDomains.com |

Upgrade from 2.0.3 over 2.0.2 went mostly fine. For me the text did appear next to icons in the Quickstater.
Mostly... In previous upgrades, I found that my language preferences (spellcheckers) were stupidly discarded altogether, replaced by the default install languages, including swahili (for mind-boggling unknown reasons). This time I took care to save my /share/dict/ooo/ folder because I suspected this weird behavior would return... and it did.
Well, I was glad I had saved my prefs... So I overwrote the dict/ooo folder with my backup, including the dictionary.lst file that contains the list of languages I use. But it didn't work: the same default install languages appeared.
Fortunately, I had also saved the OO folder in "Documents and Settings": so I overwrote that also, and at last I recovered my languages preferences. I just hope this didn't overwrite any important file for the 2.0.3 version that will come haunt me in unsuspect ways later...
So do not assume all your preferences will be saved in upgrading, the install process can't be trusted that much.
Now:
What precise files to backup to keep languages preferences?
Why are some preferences kept and other mindlessly discarded by the install?
Why should swahili be important to me?
... and other such questions that come to mind.
/edit: ok, found it. Another file to backup is:
\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Linguistic.xcu
Geez louise...! |

After my post above, I found more dialog box text and icons missing.
I'd recommend uninstalling 2.02 first, and delete the c: program file folder and the oo folder in your c: documents and settings/ app data/ .
When I reinstalled 2.03 clean all the text and icons were appearing properly. This was on the Windows XP version. _________________ http://www.BigTicketDomains.com |

Should I download full 2.0.3 version or there is a small upgrade pack (several megabytes) from 2.0.2 to 2.0.3 to download for Windows XP? |

@KRL: Anoying bug surely, esp. if it's generalized to all WinXP users.
@Zheliu: They mention a standalone patch available soon, but maybe that's only for the security holes fixes. I would hope they'd create upgrade patches too (watch the fanboys come defend OOo's ways though!). |

Incremental updates will be available soon and will be used in future.

There are strategy problems with doing updates that means that they have to be done properly. Under Linux it is being done with delta RPM which also allow for the core RPM's to be unified. Under Windows MSI does have a patch format called MSP but I have never seen it used. _________________ Arch Linux

Not all users. I have Windows XP, I installed 2.0.3 without uninstalling 2.0.2 first, and I don't have those problems. It seems there are a number of people who are having that problem, however. Not sure why mine is different.
BTW, I am running WinXP Pro Service Pack 2. _________________ Laugh at life or life will laugh at you. |

"Incremental updates will be available soon and will be used in future."
That's very good news. Thanks for the confirmation.
"Not all [WinXP] users."
Glad to hear its not generalized.

I just noticed this bug isn't fixed after all... guess I'll have to ask them to reopen the issue.
/edit: oh, just noticed I could reopen it... cool. |
