I had experienced very slow opening of xls ( and also converted sxc fom xls) files in OO. This had nothing to do with slow opening of OO itself. For example a very large spreadsheet was taking as much as 6~7 minutes or more to open while the same spreadsheet in Excel was taking less than 30 seconds.
A closer look of messages displayed on status bar it was observed that although loading and calculating of cell was over in reasonable time the program was working for a long time in "adapting row height". I suspected that this was due to formatting issues so I treid removing all formatting but this did not work.
The hack solution I found was to open the spreadsheet in Calc and then pick all the sheets and copy them to a new file. The new file thus created opens very fast.
Why this happens is still a mystery but my co-workers are now able to use Calc more effectively instead of grumbling and threatning to switch back to M$ offerings.
