|
|
Our accounts department have several large excel spreadsheets that they use ona daily basis, ranging from 7Mb to 30Mb in size.
Opening and modifying these sheets in Calc is considerably slower than they were in Excel.
Can take 10 seconds to open a 10mb spreadsheet as opposed to 1-2 secs in Excel.
Also when editting the sheet and putting in formula's the text types in and completes in like lagged state, they type 20 things, then it fills each one in (if I am making any sense).
A check of the PC shows no worries as far as CPU and memory usage. The PC it's running on is a P4 3.3Ghz with 1Gb of RAM so should be more than enough to cope?
Is there any way to speed Calc up any? or is this because we are using MS Excel format spreadsheets from within Calc? _________________ Thanks,

What happens if OpenDocument is used instead? You should find the speed improved as no import filter is used. Still, Calc is known to recalculate relatively slowly for a spreadsheet. Which version are you using? Recent versions have featured speedups in this area. _________________ Arch Linux

We just downloaded it yesterday so am guessing it's the latest version.
What is OpenDocument? _________________ Thanks,

In short, OpenDocument is the default format of OOo. Try converting it to an OpenDocument spreadsheet (.ods) and then seeing how long it takes to open. _________________ Arch Linux

You may get faster loading from a .ods (OpenDoc) file, but in general, Calc is noticeably slower than Excel. Can you just leave the sheet open? At least you only have to suffer the loading delay one time.

You can turn it off by Tools > Cell Contents > Autoinput (make sure it's UNchecked). |
