#1 : "standard" MS does not exist ! There are even differences between several
versions of MS due to their propierty software. But our developers came close Laughing
So you will be able to save as .doc .xls and .ppt, but you might encounter minor
differences ( don't know what .pub is though)

#2 : yes, of course you can open these files with OOo, it's open source

At least .doc, .xls and .ppt, yes. What is .pub?

There is nothing 'standard' about those file formats. They are all closed specification (if at specified at all) so you should not expect to use them between different computers and programs flawlessly. OOo does use a set of reverse engineered file filters (like every other non-MS application) to give access to these files and to save to them. Support is generally rather good, better than most commercial applications and sometimes better than Word itself. Due to the general crapness of MS's formats MS Office will fail to open files from a different version of Office for no well explained reason, OOo may well open them. OOo can also open many corrupted MS files as the way the filters work is different. It will also ignore pre-Office 2003 passwords as they aren't encrypted. .pub is not supported however.

OOo uses OpenDocument by default which is an ISO standard for data interchange. The specification is openly available so any application can support it.

Even within a specific fiel extension, such as .doc, there are numerous formats. Do you have a specific version in mind?

The Word format at least has not changed significantly, at least in terms of backwards compatibility, since Word 97. OOo can handle 97/2000/2002/2003 documents without too many problems.

This seems to be true of Excel's format as well.

Not sure about PowerPoint.

Just as Intel's CPUs since the 8085 are "drinking persons'" chips: they all have an output pin called "ALE". Cool
