hey

im a new mac user and im trying to setup open office on my imac. so i downloaded openoffice and it said i needed to install x11, so i downloaded x11 whcih says a newer version of the software already exsists on my mac, so i went through the support manual from openoffice and installing it on my mac and it said to re-install it by going to library-reciepts and deleting x11user.pkg from there but its not even in there!
someone please please help me i need a decent word processor and really dont wanna have to purchase ms office just because i cant get openoffice to work!

you must be running 10.4. you must install X11 from you tiger DVD. the X11 on apple's site is for 10.3 only.

by that im guessing you mean the setup disc(s) that came with the mac? ive found a x11 pkg file on the disc and set that up, which installed successfully but openoffice still wont open it keeps saying i need to inst, but i still dont think x11 is installed properly because it doesnt appear in the utilities folder like i know it should!
is it possible for anyone to send me the file if they have it?!

the one on the dvd is the one you want, you don't need another copy.

did you remove the install receipts and then re-install x11?

Hello!

So this is where I am at - I removed the X11 receipt and installed from the OS system disc. I still get the message that Open Office can't run because X11 isn't installed.

Any advice? Thank you!

X11 should be in your Applications/Utilities folder, double click it an make sure it runs.

oh,

The trick was to go to /Library/Receipts and delete the X11User.pkg receipt in there. Be aware that it's the /Library of root not for the user.

Once the receipt is deleted the user should be able to (re)install X11.

Jake -

Thanks for the info. It's interesting - that is where I deleted the receipt. After I reinstalled X11 does not appear in my Utility folder. Can you think of any reason that might happen?

Thanks for the help!

i don't know, really. i'm on panther, and i've only heard this problem on Tiger.

i'd do a spotlight search to see if there are other reciepts (or maybe the program itself) in the system somewhere. if you can find the X11 preferences, I'd trash those.

there are two other options. The first is to install XDarwin (via Fink, for ease) which is another X11 program, and should also work.

the second is to use NeoOffice, which does not require X11.
