When you select and copy text from a web page with images (here's an example page),
then paste it into openoffice writer (or anything else, I presume), openoffice will paste the images into the document, but as linked images. Stupid gawddarn LINKS! Instead of just saving the images and incorporating them to the document.
What does that mean?
* everytime you load that document, you will need an internet connection
* even if you have a 3mbits internet connection, it will make your computer hang for a LONG time loading those images.
* moving through the pages of a document makes you LAG in a terrible way (because images are loaded one at a time, although the time it takes to startup at first makes you think it loaded all the images)
* deleting those images is painful because, once again, you lag while doing that.
* if you copy-paste contents from a local HTML page that has images, and delete the page or the images OR move them, the images will be broken inside the ODT file and you will have no way to access them.
I do these kinds of manipulations quite often, when I want to archive an interesting net article to opendocument format (for personal enjoyment purposes).
Am I doomed, or just being stupid? I have googled a lot for this problem and searched these forums -- which is quite painful task, so I'm sorry if this has already been asked before. This is my #1 annoyance with OpenOffice, the rest runs smoothly

Holy cow! That was a fast reply! Thank you for the tip !
That brings me to the obvious rant however; this seems like a pretty much "hidden" feature. The question can be divided in two:
* what design decisions are behind the fact that breaking off links is not the default behavior? I mean, from my personal view on things (all those "annoyances" I wrote above), it seems somewhat illogical that OOo doesn't do that as a default behavior. Do you have an idea why?
* IF this is a case of "WONTFIX", do you think it would be good to have a button in the image toolbar or a right-click menu entry to break the links? I mean I have been annoyed by this for quite a while, puzzled by OO's preferences options (I saw some links related stuff there) and certainly did not think of edit > links
Bonus question: where is the bug tracker so I could try to find possible existing bugs related to this? The website is beyond my understanding must be because I'm used to bugzillas and launchpad. |

Is there also a way to turn off this feature so images never get linked in this way? |

And what about copied web pages from password-protected sites?
Do I really have to copy every single image by itself (why does this work btw)? |

Okay I found a solution. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, Firefox is my web browser.
I do a lot of manuals, and usually do this from websites that have free tutorials
and with permissions from their respective authors.
In Firefox I save the Web page.
File,
Save Page As,
When the dialog appears,
I choose where I want to create my new folder,
Click New Folder button,
I usually give a descriptive name, such as, The Gimp Manual Capsule 2010
On the Lower right hand, there is a button, it is usually set to Web page HTML only,
Click this button and change it to Web page Complete. Then Click the Save button.
A download dialog will appear, I right click the download bar when it completes,
and select open containing folder. (You might need to clean this folder for images
that you don't need.)
Now I open the saved html file with OpenOffice Writer,
Right click the HTML file, and select open with,
choose OOwriter and voila!
I can now edit the files to my hearts content.
I can also edit the images, and not be bound by the size of the image holder that was set
previously by the original author. The images will be in a sub-folder.
I can now translate, and create or modify and Save as PDF.
Most of my personal manuals are created in Capsule folders.
This way my manual remains small, as all images are in a sub-folder.
If I need to fix an image I just fire up The Gimp.
My manual using links updates the image automatically.
Just reload, and create an updated PDF manual.
If I need to show, I copy the whole Capsule folder to USB key.
Put it in My laptop, and Do My Impress Presentation, Manual etc.,
without the embarrassment of missing images, sound files etc.,
This is specially true if you don't have access to an Internet connection.
P.S. I always give credit back to the original authors and direct students to the source of the information.

Those manipulation processes are due to the various way of copying images to that site. The format may change when you copy contents from a web page into Word. Microsoft Word gives you choices how contents should be pasted to your document as formatted text (Rich Text Format), unformatted text, unformatted unicode or HTML format. This link will help you somehow in doing your job: http://www.ehow.com/how_5919732_paste-word-document.html _________________ Multivariate Testing |
