|
|
One of my StarOffice 8/Linux spreadsheets, after suffering some electrical noise here, has sprouted a vertical gray strip on the left, with small boxes at the top numbered 1 through 5. Adjacent to certain rows are some kind of tabs, and clicking on them hides (rather than deletes, as I originally thought) the row. The sheet-scroll arrows are at the bottom of this vertical panel.
What is it, and how do I get rid of it? I would have searched for this topic and did look in "Help," but I don't know what it's called and have never seen it before. _________________ --John

Could you perhaps post a screenshot to somewhere like http://imageshack.us/ and paste it here using the Img button?
EDIT: I meant to add (David reminded me) that you could import the file into a new document using Insert >Sheet from file. _________________ search forum by month

Lightning? Power surge? ...If so, then the file could be messed up. If no further options are found, I'd simply redo, and save time in the long run. It would be interesting to see what you are seeing if you could upload the file as suggested by noranthon.

| Sounds like a data group display. Try Data/Outline / ungroup. |

Well, let's see if this works. I've never tried posting an image before.

This is part of a ham radio log, and for some reason my radio signal (on certain frequencies, at my full transmitter power) was interfering with my computer: switching screens, opening menus, adding nonsense entries, etc. Cranking the power down stopped that, but I never have figured out how to get rid of this gray strip!
PS: the Data/Outline/Ungroup is already grayed out. _________________ --John

It certainly looks like a data group. But | Quote: | | PS: the Data/Outline/Ungroup is already grayed out. | If you haven't already, try Data > Outline > Group and then Data > Outline > Ungroup.
Other than that it sounds like RFI has trashed your file. Try selecting the entire sheet, copy & paste as unformatted text into a new sheet. _________________ Dale

Any chance you could post the file itself? If so, you might try dropfiles.net, but those !#@$ ads will still likely be invasive[**]. Or, perhaps take the file elsewhere and see if it is the file and not your setup.
[**] EDIT ...to say nothing of those REALLY annoying behind the scenes pop-ups for poker that I thought I'd seen the last of!!!!
P.S. Can you cover the computer with some sort of screening to block out radio frequencies? Usually the problem is the other way around as the computer interferes with radio frequencies.

Well! I was about to try the Group/Ungroup suggestion, Dale, when I noticed a "Remove" option at the bottom of that dropdown menu. I tried that, and the gray strip disappeared.
Thanks all for the help!
On the RFI, I used to have this problem when using the 21MHz band but this was 3.5 MHz where I'd never had interference with the computer before. (It's right beside the amateur radio transmitter.) I'll try better coax and maybe get a better antenna tuner. That power should be going to my antenna, not into the air here in the basement! _________________ --John
