Tabbing cells in Calc

I am new to calc and have noticed when finishing typing in a cell and hitting "enter" it drops to the cell directly underneath the one you were just in. In excel it use to go to the first cell on the next line. Is there anyway to setup Calc to automatically have the cursor go to the first cell in the next row.

Pressing Enter can be changed to do nothing, or move to the next cell up/down/left/right.

I did find that but I was wondering if instead of just moving it directly down a cell if it could move it down and to the first cell in that row like excel does by default. Any ideas?

You have to select a range of cells in Calc to get the behavior you describe. Pressing Enter when in the last column of the range will move to the first cell of the next row (assuming Enter has been set to "move right" in instead of "move down"). I think this is also true in Excel. I don't see any need to move down and to the first cell unless a range is selected.

If you are in cell D1 and you hit "enter" the cursor drops down to the cell directly underneath it (in this case D2).

What I am asking: If after hitting "enter" on cell D1 the cursor would drop down to the A2 cell.

I'm not sure whether you saw my 1st post that looked like the one below as I didn't care for it and deleted the same. This one is more appropriate.

There is no direct way to get this movement for the Enter key.

You can record a macro of pressing the down arrow and the Home key then save the macro in the My Marcos > Standard library. From a Calc file do Tools > Customize > Keyboard tab and assign this macro to the Enter key. The bullet at the top of this dialog should be in Calc!

How did you get Excel to do this by default? Default in Excel 97 is to move down. I can change it to move up, left or right. I can't find any option to move down and to the first cell in the row.

I am sorry that I didn't make this clearer, maybe this will help. To get this to happen in excel you can hit the tab button a couple of times, after doing this you can hit "enter" and it will take you to the first cell in the next row. If you just select a cell in excel and hit enter it will drop directly down like calc does. So my revised question would be after tabbing in Calc, how to get the cursor to drop down to the first cell in the next row.

Thanks. I never knew this or had completely forgotten it. It does work in Excel 97. Excel seems to remember the cell where tabbing first started and Enter moves to the cell below that cell, but it doesn't have to be the first cell in the row.

When you have unocked your input range(s) and protected the sheet, the Tab-key navigates through all unlocked cells row by row.
Select range(s)
Format>Cells Tab:Protection uncheck "Locked"
Tools>Protect>Sheet
