|
|
I am contemplating a complete switch to OO Writer, however there is one feature in MS Word for which I cannot find an equivalent in Writer. It's the feature that lets you designate "Don't add a space between paragraphs of the same style" in paragraph settings. I've searched all over the Internet and within Writer's help file and paragraph settings, but I cannot find something in Writer to duplicate this handy MS Word feature. (I especially like to use this featuer for bullet points where they are single spaced and then like to put 0.06 space after the last bullet point so I don't have to insert an extra carriage return--which can cause problems with pagination.) Does anyone know how to do this in writer?
Thanks,
Mike |

The only way that I can think of doing what you want is to do it manually by having your regular style (and bullet style) defined without spaces either before or afterwards and then have a special style of "space before" which you apply to the paragraph that you want.
Someone may be able to come up with a better solution, though.

I just added this comment to the issue: | Quote: | > A feature where spacing above and below the paragraph would depend

Might this be better as a list property? As with paragraph styles, you could
assign space above and below the list (appearing on the Bullets & Numbering/List
Styles dialogs).
I think this would give a better user experience (clearer/easier to understand)
and better flexibility: If you have a pp style setting that says "ignore spacing
if the adjacent style is the same", how would you change the spacing between
list items? |
There are a number of workarounds I can think of:
• manually add space to the first & last items (or the pp's before/after)
• define (maybe a whole bunch of) extra styles: a "first" and "last" for each type of list
• add spacer rectangles (graphic with no fill, no lines)
• put the list in a frame
None of these is really a great substitute; I think the last might be the best but I haven't used it enough to say for sure. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion. |

You can record a macro of the mouse clicks necessary to apply direct formatting to a paragraph:
Format > Paragraph > Indents and Spacing tab > adjust value of "Below paragraph". |

The problem seems to be that you want no spacing between body text paragraphs, and no spacing between bulletted paragraphs either, but you do want spacing between body text and bulletted paragraphs.
- Create a new paragraph style for your bullets
- Edit the bullet paragraph style
- Borders, top and bottom borders, white, and set the line to the spacing you want. If you want more than 9 pt spacing then apply spacing to contents as well. Make sure that the checkbox "Merge with next paragraph" is checked.
- No line is not an option. If there is no line border, then the spacing is also not applied. I think it should be applied anyway, but it is not.

Oh that's clever. Very nice.
It's a shame that you can't set a border spacing without a border. |

Thank you, all of you, for your insights on this. Actually, last night, right after I sent the note, I realized that I could set up separate styles to do this. And sure enough, when I viewed all the styles that are already in Writer I discovered that it has predefined styles to do just this (List 1Start, List 1Cont., List 1End, etc.).
The set up isn't quite as easy as in Word. Not having the Word-like feature can cause some (minor) headaches, but nothing that can't be dealt with fairly simply with the styles (and style capabilities) in Writer.
Thanks again,
Mike |
