This morning I used HP's FontSmart to remove some fonts from my system (actually, it just unregisters them), a Windows XP SP2 system. Then I continued working on an OO Writer document I had open. The math equations now only display a square symbol where a '+' symbol is supposed to be. In addition, 'left (' and 'right )' also display in squares. There may be other symbol problems that I haven't seen yet.
I believe I reinstalled all the fonts that were active before doing this, but it did not fix the problem. I uninstalled OO, then downloaded and installed the 2.1 version and removed everything from the registry with the search match of "Open Office". That didn't fix the problem either.
Note: I didn't go into the installation area of the previous version of OO and delete any files. The last time I did that on an upgrade I had to spend days re-customizing everything.
I'm desperate -- I use Writer and Math constantly for my work, but I now have an OO installation that won't render equations correctly.
If anyone has information on the fonts that OO uses or suggestions on how to fix this problem, I'd be very grateful! |

This is a SWAG based on doing File > New > Formula and click Format > Fonts.
The boxes are filled as follows and are the defaults:
Thorndale, Italic
Thorndale
Thorndale
Thorndale
Thorndale
Albany
Cumberland
If your display differs then perhaps clicking the Default button in this dialog will restore it.
If you click Modify and click a catagory then you should be able to see if these fonts are visible to OOo. |

| Thanks, John. I had already tried that, as I always change to the sans serif font. The default button apparently sets those choices to the current default, rather than returning you to some standard set-up. |

After spending a fair bit of time comparing font files to other systems, etc., I decided to install the latest version of Open Office. The problem still existed. A week or two later I had to reboot my machine for some reason. After the reboot, I noticed the Open Office equations were working OK again.
This leads me to hypothesize that a temporary or cache copy of something had gotten corrupted.
Lesson: reboot the machine when problems happen, especially for an Windows OS. |
