Here is my goal:

I am setting up financial spreadsheet. I would love to be able to enter an amount and also what it was for ($100 flamingo food) in the same cell. However, I am trying to add the cells as well. So is there anyway I could enter the text in the formula bar somehow and hide it there so I could still add the cell but be able to click on it and see the text?

Is this possible or is there something similar to this I could do?

Just a question, why would you want to enter the number and the text in the same cell? I would think that the point of a spreadsheet is to separate the text from the numbers on purpose.
if it's just a question of viewing it together, you can have two separate cells and then concatenate them together like this:
Code:
=A1&B1

if your number and text are in A1 and B1
In terms of formatting the number to show $NUMBER, you can try using the text() function for that:
Code:
=text(A1;"$0")&B1

edit: fixed typo

If you still want to do that, could the input help under Data validity be of any use?

thanks geoff. that is exactly what i was looking for.

i wanted this because it allows me to enter minor info that doesn't warrant it's own column. it would be nice if i could only place the mouse over it and it would show up, like captions on webpages. but this is good enough. thanks again.
