| I am used to MS Word reading the zip code of the addressee and automatically printing the correct postal bar code above the address on an envelope. Does Writer do this? How? |

No, as far as I know Writer (still) can't do PostNet bar codes.
At least, the OOo 2.0.3 I use can't do it. If you're using OOo 2.1 and you can't do it, then it's still not implemented.
There are a few threads on this topic in the message base, happy searching. 
FWIW, I use Word97 for all my mailing applications (labels, bulk letters, etc.) because I use PostNet bar codes in all my sending address applications. IMHO, until Writer implements this feature, MSWord is the Tool Of Choice for such things...
