How can I retain all my carefully compiled Gallery images, sounds and also Templates for Writer, Calc and Impress, when upgrading to a new version of OOo in Windows XP? Installing a new version of OOo wipes all existing items.

Either put it in the user profile if you're the only user using the PC. Else, you can create a directory somewhere and tell it to OOo, see here : Sharing Galleries.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks for advice, I had found I had miss-entered the Gallery path in the options > paths.

Now all I have to work out is how to tell newbies in the simplest language how to save and reuse their "Share" items when upodating OOo.
