Overall, I like OpenOffice Writer over Word, but there is one Word feature I really like -- Outline View. Is there a similar feature in OpenOffice?

Ditto. I presume by the silence on this thread that Outline views do not exist?

I'm trying to get Format->Numbering->Outline/Positioning to do some sort of indented position WYSIWYG on the screen, and I'm having no success.

I'm a brand new user of Writer, and I'm pretty disappointed in this behavior. What am I doing wrong? This may drive me back to Word. Sad

Outline viewing and handling is an omitted feature, alas !
And import of WinWord structured numbering of § is severely flawed, too.
We had some heated arguments on that matter on Framasoft.net, last week.

It is too bad that developpers of Sun Office and of OOo stay on a position of deny of the usefulness of this very important service.

However, it is true that Latex has seven levels of outlining. I do not yet use Latex. I have thousands hours of work on Winword files.

Outline view in the veryform as it can be used in MS Office really does not exist in OOo. However, it has a feature which, in many respects, is more powerful. It is called Navigator and we can use it perfectly for moving parts of a long document up and down, here and there within the doc.

Thanks Gabor !
That is just the information that changes all !
Yes, navigator works.
Yes, with its control, I can specify the whole structured "legal numbering", and it works.
I just have to erase the NumLegalNumbering from MS WinWord.,which was not correctly read.
And now, the table of content is correct, too.

You have relieved me from a great pain in the ass, for converting WWord files to OOo...

I apologize for charging developers of denying. Only some french too much enthusiastic users denied...

Lavau

IMHO, Writer's handling of outlining (not just Navigator, but the features in Outline Numbering, Tables of Contents and Indexes) is much better, more stable and certainly behaves more predictably than that other program you mentioned.

Glad you're happy now

I agree. There seem to be many features of working with outline numbering which are not compatible with MS Orifice, simply because Word is less capable than Writer in this respect. When I've needed to co-edit documents with Word users, this has been a problem. However, I tend to use the PDF export function now to share documents with others.

Like that avatar sleeper_service!

Agree with you 100%, even down to using PDF for distribution to word users. If the rest of the world (especially here in South Africa) would just wake up and start using OOo..., but maybe that's a topic for the General Discussion forum.
