Hi!

I have a problem with the chapter numbering, hope you can help me. I´m using the German version of OO, maybe some of the functions have different names, but I hop you get an impression of what my problem is.

I activated chapter numbering, assigned Heading 1 to Level 1 of the numbering, Heading 2 to Level 2, etc. Everything worked fine until three days ago. I opened my OO-Document and suddenly some parts of the numbering have disappeared. There are blank spaces where the numbers shoud be (white spaces, not grey). The Table of Contents also shows only blanks where the numbers should be. It seems OO still uses the numbering, because the order of the following chapters is correct, it just doesn´t show the numbers anymore.

Ideas anyone?

Sascha

Interesting. When you go to Tools - Outline Numbering, what do you see in the preview pane on the right-hand side? Do you still see numbers next to all headings, or are some of them missing here too?

Maybe this will provide a clue.

Hi Anton,

I just checked the Tools - Outline Numbering - Menu, the preview pane shows all numbers correctly.

Anyway, i found a way to restore the numbers: When I move the cursor to the last character of the paragraph that comes right before the heading, press the delete key so that the heading becomes part of the paragraph, press enter again and reassign the Heading 1-Style to the text, the number reappears.

Although this workaround provides help for now, I´d still like to know if there is a bug in OO...

Thx for the help
Sascha

Obviously, this seems a difficult -to-reproduce problem. Anyway, in reporting suspisions of bugs, please provide details on the version you are using, the operating system, configuration.

I had the same problem in OOo 2.0.2, Linux. Solved it by entering a hard page break before the heading with the missing number. (Headings should make their own pagebreaks in my document already.)

In OOo 2.01 (the Linspire CNR version of 17 Feb 2006) I find that the paragraph numbers associated with heading1, 2, 3, etc. can come and go at what appears to be random. Sometimes formating the paragraph to default, then again as a heading will restore the number, but it might not be the correct number for the sequence it is in. Other times the line appears to be formated as a heading, but there is no number visible in either the print or web layout. Clicking on the toolbar button for numbering has occasionally brought back the right number, even cycling among outline number, list number, and no number.
/Tools/OutlineNumbering doesn't show paragraph numbers for headings 2 and 3, the ones that vanished.
VERY frustrating. Can't avoid numbers as the documents are for a government contract.

On Linspire 5.0.59 and KDE 3.2.2.

In my case, with OOo 2.0.1 on Linux, the missing header numbering was caused by the configuration of /Tools/OutlineNumbering. These settings override the formating entered in the Stylist for HeadingX.
Don't know how the /T/ON became different from the Stylist settings, but it may have something to do with the document's origin in MSword.
Have created an Issue, FYI, with a suggestion for the Help text.

NEVER use a numbered style for headings. This is the main cause for numbering problems. Numbering is different from MS Word: in Word, you have to create the numbering in the style. In OOo, there is a dedicated tool the menu Tools>Outline Numbering. This is the only way to set a numbering for headings. Bullet/numbering function is to be used only for lists that are not headers.

To solve your problem, remove the numbering from your heading styles, then use the Tools>Outline Numbering.

Thank you, Hagar. Beautifully clear explanation. How do we get that into the Help files?

You're right, it's not clear at all in the help files, so I've posted an issue : http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=67281.

You can add [Solved] in your first post title, it helps to spot the issues that don't need further attention.
