Windows? A Windows Right-mouse option [Change Attributes], not an OpenOffice option [or at least you don't need one.]

You can also make the file into a PDF. That is read-only (for the most part). _________________ Laugh at life or life will laugh at you. |

Looking back, the PDF may be what you want/need. A usually Read-only file can be changed back or saved as another file name. It's all relative to needs, and there is no absolute security, just minimal, aside from very strong encryption.

Another thing you might try is go to Tools->Protect Document->Document. You will then have the ability to set a password which should keep anyone other than the people who know the password from changing anything. _________________ Laugh at life or life will laugh at you. |

This will protect the naming and order of the sheets collection.
Tools>Protect>Sheet will protect all locked cells in the selected sheet(s). Cells are locked by default without any effect until you protect the sheet. _________________ Rest in peace, oooforum.org

that would work for some documents but we r trying to use openoffice in place of Excel so there r some company documents in a public folder that needs to be read only files so they veiw them but not change them unless they have the proper authority _________________ Aaron |

This is done by the operating system, in particular the file system. Simply use your preferred file manager to make the files read-only exept for the owner or a particular group. Under Linux this is a matter of seconds. Don't know about Windows. _________________ Rest in peace, oooforum.org

I replied to a PM. The point is that a Read Only is a file attribute, and that can be readily altered. We have been down this road before ...There is only so much protection that you can give a document, and a Read Only attribute is the least protective of all. In fact, all you have to do is to Save As another file name, and that document is then not Read Only, and can be altered.
