http://ui.openoffice.org/VisualDesign/OOo_galaxy.html

I have been trying to find more information or details as to the progress of these new icons for OOo, but haven't had much luck. I am curious to try them out sometime.

Does anyone know how far along this icon set is?
Does anybody know when it will be included in the developer builds?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, especially in regard to the "Tango" icon set, which is (by some accounts) on the verge of adoption as the cross-platform default. At least Novell seems to be moving full speed in that direction.

I've seen nothing definitive from any OO.org source, but according to the last RC release notes it should be included, but I don't see it yet.

Maybe Tango is just going to be an "alternative icon set" like "Industrial" or "Crystal," and Galaxy is going to be the official default. I rather hope not, as Tango seems to have a lot of momentum as a unified desktop application icon set.

My understanding is that it is just Novell (not Sun) who wants to make Tango the default icon set for each platform (with the exception of KDE and probably Mac). I haven't seen anything from Sun about Tango either. The only information I have seen has been on Novell mailing lists about making Tango default. I can confirm, though, that Tango is default on the 2.1 Beta of the Novell Edition for Windows.

It looks to me as though Sun is aiming toward having Galaxy as default.

I just found out from Sun that the Galaxy icon set is targeted for release with OOo 3.0, but should be available for testing around the time when 2.3.1 is released.

I'd like to call this yet another bone-headed "NIH" move, but Sun may have licensing issues that force it to develop it's own icon set that it can legally sell with Star Office.

I guess this is another way that having a proprietary sibling project actually impedes progress.

PS: I just checked: Tango is under a CC:ShareAlike license, so I don't see why Sun would have to pay to license it, but IANAL.

Quest-88,

Thank you for posting that information. Especially the slide show, it was nice to see what might be in store for OOo sometime down the road. I look forward to see what comes of it.

From that picture, it looks like they're mainly transparent. While they may be distinguishable against a solid white background, they're going to be far less clear on the desktop against a picture or a different colured background.

Why do the icons need to be changed anyway?

Who knows... you'd have to ask Sun that question.

This thread was initially about Sun making a new icon set (Galaxy) for the tool bars in OOo. I didn't even know they were making new desktop and file icons as well until Quest-88 posted that.

An update: The Tango icons are included in the latest snapshot from OO.org, and scheduled for release with 2.3 in September. They can ne selected as another icon set, chosen under Tools > Options > OO.org > View, or they will be selected automatically if your desktop specifies it. On my Fedora 7/Gnome, the snapshot uses Tango by default.

They are already included in the official OOo packages from Novell, Fedora and Ubuntu (and maybe others).

Having seen them in a real app, I can't say I like them all that much. Although the overall look is clean and attractive, I find them difficult to distinguish visually. E.g. the old File > Open icon was a distinct yellow color and folder shape. In Tango, it's a dull gray, er something, I can't quite tell what.

The Galaxy Icons are finally out as of DEV300_m10.

Download: http://rapidshare.com/files/109305881/images.zip.html

- Backup your original images.zip first.
- Copy the downloaded images.zip to your share/config/ folder.
- Select them as Default in OOo settings.
