We have some excel files which have several formulas, links to other excel sheets. When we try to open these files using OpenOffice Calc, system becomes extremely slow.
Kindly suggest some solutions for improving the performance.
There is general feedback from users, that the system slows down while working with open office calc. Can we do some thing for improving the performance (any patch )
Thanks & Regards

Optimize your formulas, so you won't recalculate the same expression over and over again. Put repetitive calculations in separate ranges, so they are evaluated once before beeing referenced. _________________ Rest in peace, oooforum.org

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your reply. Regarding formulas, we are trying to optimise it.
But when we select say 100 - 200 rows / columns , system becomes very slow as if it hung.
Kindly suggest whether some patches will improve the performance. Or some settings in OpenOffice Calc will solve this performance problem.
Kindly revert back, its a very serious problem.
Regards

Without a single detail nobody can help you. I suspect you have the same problems like this fellow: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=59839
If you desparately need to misuse a spreadsheet as database, then I recommend to stay with Excel and it's old binary file format. _________________ Rest in peace, oooforum.org

What details you want ?
My problem is not with a specific formula or a particular file.
I am talking about general performance issue.
Even if you select some thing in CALC, system becomes slow. Forget about any other operation. |

I agree with your basic premise here, in that the database proper is the tool to use perhaps in this case. However, I have sometimes wondered myself about the fact that the common folk [at least myself] having been given apparently the same tools as the experts [a bazillion cells filled with formulas and data] who use them daily with massive amounts of information [as in the military], have the same expectations without access to a Cray computer. It's reminiscent of the used-car-salesman approach: "It works fine, just don't press too hard on the brake."
Whether used as a "database" or not, it is a spreadsheet, and should compute. ...I say this about all office suite programs, not this one in particular.

We do not know the operating system, nor the vendor of the office suite (there are some different compilations of this suite). We do not even know the version number. You started with

What are you using this file for?
What hardware?
What Operating System ?
What version of Excel?
What version of OOo ? ( we need the three digit number - look under help)
Number of sheets?
Approximate number of cells used in a calculation?
Amount of data being accessed?
Do you have Autocalculate turned on?
Can you supply an example?
Handy places to post a file:
media fire http://www.mediafire.com/
or
mytempdir.com http://www.mytempdir.com
That should do for a start. _________________ jrkrideau
