connecting to analysis services

Hi,

does anyone know a way to connect openoffice to an analysis service?
I want to connect calc to my analysis server so the users are able to make pivot tables with the data in the analysis service.

If "analysis service" can be translated to "database accessible via odbc" then you can setup the service as odbc-source, connect a Base document to that source, register the database and create pivot tables (data pilots) from the registered datasource.

No, analysis service is a microsoft BI thing.
I don't really know what it does, but in excel 2007 you have the possibility to connect to that service and then you are able to select a cube.
If you've selected a cube you see all the measures and you're able ta make pivot tables with them.

Now I would want to to the same in OpenOffice.

Chances are small that anybody here has anidea what a "BI thing" or "analysis service" by Microsoft is. You do not even provide a link. If that service can be seen as some kind of database (source of tabular data) and Microsoft offers som standardized interfaces via ODBC (to be setup in the Windows system panel) then you could at least read the data through that odbc driver, represent it in Base and use it in Calc and Writer.

I'm sorry,

analysis service is a business inteligence tool for sql server.
It is used for datawarehousing and reporting.
simply put it presents the user with cubes (facts and dimensions) and measures.
This allows users to make custom reports in the form of pivot tables.

Now i can connect to the datawarehouse, but this is something a user shouldn't do.

And I think you're right, I can't find anything on this subject. so I guess it really is not possible

At least MS SQL server provides odbc drivers. So you can create pivot tables from the raw database data in Calc. But I doubt that you can access the output of the analysis tool (I would not expect that from Microsoft). Well, common export formats such as plain text (*.csv) or dBase (*.dbf) may be an option.

If this would be possible with OOO it would be very interesting for me too !
In http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C6C3E9EF-BA29-4A43-8D69-A2BED18FE73C&displaylang=en You can find Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services 10.0 OLE DB Provider which enables connection to Analysis cube from Excel (2003 version at least), however keeps "invisible" in OOO.
Since we are using in our company a BI project based on this tecnology, would be nice to have an alternative front-end at least.
