Thanks for the quick reply Villeroy!
I have downloaded and looked at your .ods file and the Paths you have defined in there are great, but I am after something very straightforward - I think.
If I insert a cell from the other sheet into the payments sheet by typing = and then clicking on the cell, I get.....
='file:///C:/Users/Company/Documents/My Dropbox/Company/Company Content/CompanyAccounts/Company Time and Attendance.ods'#$'Time and Attendance'.J22
This works fine as it is, but I want to replace it with the Path Name so that it is more like...
='file:///path/company time and attendance.ods'#$'time and attendance'.j22
It doesn't work. Path returns the directory the sheet is stored in when used in Hyperlinks, but I don't know how to do this so that the value from the other sheet is displayed in this sheet using the Path instead of the C: etc reference.
Have I missed something blindingly obviously in the sheet you uploaded?
Thanks again. |

[Tutorial] External Links In Calc
Refer to part one and scroll down to the end. There is another attachment, which demonstrates a bug with calculated external references and how to overcome this bug.
Edit: Reading your first post, I see that you too try to use a spreadsheet as a database. The picture is not a cell value. The best you can get is a hyperlink, loading the picture in the system's picture viewer.

Hi and thanks again for taking the time out,
Just to clarify things, I am not using Calc as a database per se. I am using it to try and automate the company accounts records and hours per man (for pay) as much as possible so I only have to type a number once instead in seperate sheets.
The database aspect I suppose is only for having Hyperlinks to scanned invoices, receipts and documentation in a cell next to all of the numbers, which are used for totals etc. I am just trying to keep everything in the one place.
I am not having much luck with the links you gave me. When I put the Path name into a cell on its own it returns the path, when I put in the rest of the link into another cell that doing an "absolute" link returns, I am not getting the number from the other sheet.
So if....
='file:///C:/Users/Company/Documents/My Dropbox/Company/Company Content/CompanyAccounts/Company Time and Attendance.ods'#$'Time and Attendance'.J22
...returns the value from J22, and I input the following cells.....
A1 Path, which returns.....
file:///C:/Users/Company/Documents/My Dropbox/Company/Company Content/CompanyAccounts/
A2 'Company Time and Attendance.ods'#$'Time and Attendance'
Then surely putting
=A1&A2.J22 is the same as the absolute reference I get from typing = and then clicking the cell in the other sheet.
Idealling, I could create a Name for the Time and Attendance (and other sheets) so that a cell could be....
=TAA.J22
The reason I want it all relative is to share the entire folder with the other director and the accountant.
Where am I going wrong?
Thanks. |

Follow column B in target.ods, wrapped in the zip at the end of the tutorial. _________________ Rest in peace, oooforum.org
