scim not working with /opt/openoffice 2.3/

Hi,

I have installed the openoffice2.3 in the /opt directory and the file used is OOo_2.3.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz on fedora 7 core.

I have installed the scim rpm , m17-db rpm for the indic languages and also the fonts for the indic languages.

Now the scim setup for indic languages works fine for any application except openoffice2.3 .
On selection of any of the indic language, it prints garbage

could you help me out to get the scim setup to work fine with openoffice.

For which Indic language do you need SCIM? Most are available as keyboard layouts.

If you do need SCIM to work with OpenOffice and it does not work with the official Sun package, try the distro version.

I have downloaded openoffice3 from openoffice.org and installed in /opt directory but it does not even start with scim installed in the system.

now i m trying with openoffice2.3 installed in /opt directory.

I have installed following rpms

SCIM

and i have the fonts installed for the languages hindi,bengali,punjabi,tamil etc

Now in openoffice2.3 i have installed following rpms

by installing all these rpms i get my openoffice2.3 working properly.

The issue i m facing is that, whenever i want to use the scim layout to write in any of indic language i.e either punjabi or bengali, it is not writing properly in openoffice.

i want my open office to be in /opt directory so if i use any distro openoffice rpm it will not relocate to /opt.

Now could you please suggest the reason behind the openoffice not working properly with scim, is there any other dependency i need to install apart from the above stated rpms

A couple of years ago the problem used to be that you could get SCIM to work with the version downloaded from the Sun site but not the with the distro version – at least that was mine and other people's experience on Debian. Now the problem is that one cannot get SCIM to work with the Sun version but you can with the distro version. I have never seen an explanation or fix for the situation though this fact has been experienced by a number of people.

But I don't see what why you need SCIM. You can change the keyboard to write in Devanagari, Bengali, Gurmukhi, or Pakistan Arabic (presumably Shahmukhi) by going to System>Preferences>Hardware>Keyboard>Layouts. There is a similar possibility on KDE or you can use setxkbmap.
