As the obvious answer is: depends on the system and the installed codecs, I have to explain a bit further:
Up to now I've been using Powerpoint with the Intel indeo video codec. Now, the Indeo video codec isn't installed on newer machines and also powerpoint 2007 doesn't seem to support it any more, meaning, that even on machines that still have the Indeo codec installed, the embedded movies don't run, although the clip itself can be seen in the mediaplayer. So, maybe Powerpoint uses its own mediaplayer...
As I'm fed up with the same presentation running on one computer and not on another, I want to switch to Impress (after being happy with writer for years now )
As I have to reencode my videos (Ligos Indeo not being free), I would like to know:
- how does Impress present the videos - with its own codecs or with the in the system installed codecs / player?
- what codec to use when I want to use OpenOffice both in linux (preferable) and windows?
The videos are mostly short clips (up to 20 seconds) with a resolution around 600x500.
Thanks a lot

Sorry - no answers so far.
I decided to use xvid as a codec - which worked fine for me. I was able to edit my clips with avidemux and virtualdub,
(Offtopic: I had some problems converting from wmv to xvid using avidemux - don't know, whether I made a mistake or there were other problems, so I used Super from www.erightsoft.net, which is a windows frontend for ffmpeg, mencoder, etc.)
Furthermore, I have to admit that in the end I used powerpoint 97, as it was an important presentation for me and impress crashed twice when testing the presentation
