When I try to save a spreadsheet I get the following error:

Error loading BASIC of document
file:///Users/lewy/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/user/basic/Standard/scrip.xlb/:
General Error.
General input/output error.

At this point, I'm stuck. Nothing I have found will dismiss the error window. The only way out is to force quit X11. I can recover the spreadsheet data, since there is a recovery file created, but I still can't save.

I'm running OO 1.1.0 on Mac OS X 10.3.3 on a PowerBook G4 with Apple's X11 components. I'm just returning to Mac after years with Windows, so there is a lot I don't know about how this all fits together.

This file appears to be the problem. It should be a fairly short xml file so check you can read & write to it in a text editor.
If there is a fault with this file there should be another script.xlb file on your system where the main program is installed eg
/opt/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/user/basic/Standard/script.xlb
copy this to your home folder.
If all else fails reinstall OpenOffice.
