I'd like to be able to compose two 5.5x8.5 pages, complete with headers and footers, and then print them on a singel 8.5 by 11 sheet. I want to use them for inserting into a Day Runner. I did this once on MS Word, and it was pretty easy. Unfortunately I a) can't remember how I did it in Word, and b) can't figure out how to do it in OpenOffice.

Thanks
pd

I frequently produce this layout (2 5.5x8.5 sheets on a single 8.5x11 sheet). Here's how I've succeeded.

For the simplest layout -- just two half sheets, create 2 columns. I use these settings:
1. Format|Page|Page-tab:
a. Format = Letter
b. Orientation = Landscape.
c. Margins - 0.5" all around.
2. Format|Page|Columns-tab:
a. Columns = 2
b. Spacing = 1" (1 inch). (This creates a 1/2 inch "margin" for each half page.)

I've produced a series of Quick Reference Guides in this format (for an internal deployment at work). For that, I wanted 2 columns on each of my half sheets. To do this, create a page just as above, then:

1. I create a title across the top of the first half sheet.
2. Beneath the heading, I insert a "section" by clicking Insert|Section|Columns-tab
a. Columns = 2
b. Spacing = 0.2 (or whatever)
c. Line = 0.05 pt. (this creates a single line border between these two columsn on each sheet, but not between the two half sheets.

Issues: When I use bulletted or numbered sections, OOo will sometimes chew many lines of text if those sections wrap across a column. Insert Manual Column breaks (Insert|Manual Break) to work around that.

Oh, and obviously headers and footers don't work for this layout, because they work on the physical sheet 8.5x11 instead of the logical sheet 5.5x11. For a header/footer effect, I insert frames and manually place them. I don't create long docs in this format, so it works ok for me.

You might want to explore this.

Create two 8.5 x 11 pages using different page style if you need different headers/footers. Then do File > Print Preview, set the view to 1 row and two columns so both pages are visible, then use the "Print options page view" icon to change the page view to landscape (I think this is what you want) and set margins if needed. Now click the "Print page view" icon to get both pages on a single page. (Just to clarify, once you enter Page Preview you do all other items from within that dialog.)

Because OO will automatically shrink your pages accomplish this you may want to use a larger font size than normal when you initiatially create your two pages.
