Install AllChars (free) or Accent Composer (not free) in Windows, or switch to Spanish or US International keyboard, or install Compose Special Character or Accentuate extension in OpenOffice.

The Compose key.

If you read the AllChars site you will see that AllChars was written for Windows to make up for the lack of the Compose key there!

Useful tip if you use Linux (probably specific to Gnome (I'm using Gnome3 on Ubuntu and this really helps me)).

There are lots of hidden key combinations for reaching infrequently used characters. It is really down to how frequently you need to use them, if its once in a while, this might be of use to you:

The AltGr key used in combination with some of the punctuation keys will put the keyboard into a special mode for exactly one key press, then it will return to normal.

For example: AltGr { will put the keyboard into umlaut mode, pressing any of the vowels after this give them an umlout. So AltGr+{ and then u gives me ü

accents are the same: AltGr+: and then u gives me ú

If you are looking for some othe decoration on your vowels just go through the AltGr + "punctuation keys" and then a vowel, and you'll be sure to find what you want.
