Yesterday (Monday, August 23, 2010), I saw this article, and am led to wonder about the future of OpenOffice. Should I be trying NeoOffice instead? Here's the article:

Thoughts?

Considering that there are plenty of forks of OOo out there, I'm not too worried about the future of OpenOffice.org. Actually, I already use a fork (Go-OO.org, which is what many Linux distros use). But there is also OxygenOffice Professional, NeoOffice, IBM Symphony, and others.

Between IBM (Symphony) and Novell (Go-OO), I don't think we have to worry too much about losing corporate support for OOo. Granted, it would be nice if Oracle kept up support, but I don't think it is critical. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

First, the author does not appear to know that StarOffice is a support branding of OpenOffice.org. If StarOffice, now known as Oracle Open Office, is to continue, as the author expects, then OOo has to continue.

Second, NeoOffice is dependent on the Novell (Go-oo.org) branch of OOo, so if OOo vanishes so will NO.

Third, if you are using OS X, then independent of this discussion, I would recommend using NO.

Fourth, a lot of the confusion about OOo continuing has been caused by the rebranding of StarOffice as Oracle Open Office with use of the same numbering as OOo. Oracle has redeveloped the support brand changing the charges for some of the licenses.

Fifth, Oracle's stated goal for OOo is to combine it with other technologies. OOo will evolve.

As a general user it doesn't matter for me with whom the ownership of open office remain. Oracle is a great company to deal with and they are also doing a lot of research work on new technologies.
