I am a new user of AbiWord and have found the on-screen appearance of AbiWord rough (and strange). It says the text is New Times Roman (12) but it is rough around the edges of the letters. Is there something I should be doing?

I am also going to download OpenOffice, but that is a suite and all I need is a word processor to open my Word documents from my old computer.

Try to find antialiasing in your operating system and check it (activate)

Couple of things to try - the default is pretty ugly in Abiword....

Try Arial instead of Times New Roman

Try Times New Roman 11 point or 10 point

Set the zoom to 80-85% which makes the default 12 pt Times New Roman more readable.

It's a nice word processor, but I find OOo writer much more powerful Wink

Cheers,

G

Is the font really installed in the system? Do other fonts look ugly too?

If your computer is really old, OOo will be just some pain and disappointment to you. So, if your CPU is older than Pentium-III (or Celeron on the same core) and you've got less than 128 Mb of RAM, I recommend (sigh!) against using OOo.

Abiword has always been a bit rough, maybe it always will be.
