I'm new to here. But what I figure he means is openoffice.org website down? I've tried several times to get on and it's like the website is insanely lagged or just malfunctioning.

seems up and down quite a lot recently - sometimes I can access pages quite easily and other times some work and others don't. This is an issue with openoffice.org rather than these forums. It is the guys at oracle that need to look at it. Nobody here can do anything to fix.

As far as I can determine, the DNS for openoffice.org is not functional (and has been for a while). To me, this suggests the project is dead, or someone is trying to kill it. I sent the following message to adobe an hour or so back. Since it is really quite a high priority issue, the fact I have not gotten any reply, along with DNS being down for some time, indicates to me it is effectively all over - and is the basis for my conclusions.

If you are someone who woks on this project, I would seriously evaluate this issue; for the rest of us who might use it, we should do so as well. What is the value of a tool that disappears for days, even if it comes back online? Certainly I can now no longer suggest it to anyone in good faith. How much longer before MySQL and then Java go south too?

Subject: OpenOffice.org DNS offline?

Hello:

We noticed that last couple days that we are not able to resolve DNS for "openoffice.org", and my diagnostics indicate that this stems back to Oracle. As well as logically tracing DNS back to find a dead end, I confirmed this from a few locations to be sure it was not my DNS or immediate upstream. I did note that the name server at "8.8.8.8" is resolving "openoffice.org" to "192.9.164.104"; but that is a strangely unique (cached?) response, and "192.9.164.104" is not responsive HTTP.

Question: I see the registration for "openoffice.org" lists network-contact_ww@oracle.com; do you have any idea what is up?

When posting the message above about OpenOffice.org DNS, I was not even aware of LibreOffice (I have my own world of pain). For anyone else reading this thread that is not aware of the relationship of these two related projects, they might visit the following URLs, which on the surface seem to probably explain what is up:

http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/faq:
"Why was LibreOffice launched? Why fork from OpenOffice.org?" goes to:
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/faq/general-faq/why-was-libreoffice-launched
...and then to...
http://www.documentfoundation.org/faq/

While the OpenOffice.org state of affairs makes me gun-shy, I will still try and mull over LibreOffice. Best of luck to that group vs "The Man".

The OOo site is back up now. You should check the news on the home page about the move to Apache. Also see: Apache OpenOffice.org (Incubating)

There are problems on the servers hosted by Oracle because, apparently, Oracle wants to get rid of them. Apparently, those guys don't have a public relations department, or they don't listen to what those people are saying.
The OOo project is moving to Apache, and it won't be long before much of the services will be run from there.
