Read-Error. Error reading file during DOC recovery

Hi!

I have a big problem -

each time OOo finishes incorrectly, If I worked with .doc file, it
starts Document Recovery, I press Start recovery, but
it finishes with a mistake
"Read-Error. Error reading file."

After it says that Original document recovered.
So that that info I did't manage to save is lost.

But if the document was in .odt format it never happens. The recovery master says "Successfully recovered" and I it recovers the info I did't save.

I tried to reproduce the problem and it is easily reproduced with any new doc file by killing OOo process in Process manager.

Now I use OOo 3.3.0 build 9567 on my OpenSUSE 11.4 XFCE.

The problem also was at LibreOffice.

Yes, it happens with every .doc file.

How to reproduce the bug:

1) Create a new file
2) Save it like a .doc file
3) Set autosave to 1 min
4) Write something in the file
5) Wait until 1 min pass and see how it will be autosaved (a line that goes below the window will indicate it)
After the file was autosaved by Ooo:
6) Find the process of OOo in Process manager and kill it. OOo will finish its work incorrectly.
7) After that launch OOo again.
Cool

It will ask you whether you want to make Recovery
9) Yo say yes, it says Read-Error etc.
10) You get a blank file, without any autosaved text.

If the file was .odt it never happens!! It restores correctly

Confirmed.
One minute between autosaves is ridiculous, but corruption shouldn't occur.

Anyway, you shouldn't with doc files that way. Work in the odt (Writer format) and save in that format, only save a copy as doc when you have to send it to somebody who insists on the .doc format. Continue to work with the .odt.

I had to switch to ODT, but all my recipients use only MSO. So If I need to send many docs at one time it's a great problem.

So you confirm it's a bug? If it is a real bug, the developer should know about it.

Using ODT is not a real solution to the problem, you understand. The mistake in the program itself will remain even if I will use ODT and will affect other users.
For example my wife had lost much important info because of that bug. Who knew that?
It's strange I'm the first to report about this problem which affects all users using DOC in their everyday work.

Thus isn't the place to report bugs. You can file bug reports for OOo here: https://issues.apache.org/ooo/

I tested if it also happens with odt files and the answer is, of course, No. So, edit your files as odt and only save in doc format when you need to send a file, then you will not get into problems with crashes. Alternatively, if you insist on working in the Word format and only ever use Word, consider getting a stand-alone version from http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/list/categoryID.50726400.

If you read carefully, you would have seen that I use Linux OpenSUSE 11.4. So that MS Word won't work on my system.
The problem is that if I want to send someone a big number of doc files I have to re-save ODT files to doc manually. That's not very pleasant activity....

Lol, sorry about that. You may try your luck with LibreOffice, or ask for a macro to batchwise save all odt files in a folder in .doc format. Do that in the Macro's and API forum.

At least we have found a new bug of OOo. That's also not so bad that now people will be aware of it.
