General error. i/o error.
In the past no problems the dbf file would open in calc.
What should I do to be able to read dbf files in calc?

Try Base which is the right component for database data.
File>New>Database...
Connect to existing database of type dBase
Specify the directory of your .dbf files. dBase is a database in a directory.

Of course you are right, but I would prefer to use calc. I recently did a fresh install of ubuntu and I wonder if this is behind the problem. Are there some specific addons to enable calc to read dbf files?

You can read all database data into all office documents through Base.
Hit F4 and drag the table icon (or a query) onto a calc cell in order to get a link.
Drag selected records or all records (top left corner) from a visible row set in order to get a copy.
Data pilots directly from databases are possible.
You can add dynamically resizing calculations, charts, formattings in Calc so you get much more than you could get from a direct import.

Until a few weeks ago I was able to click on a dbf file and load it into calc. This no longer happens. I had never used base or registered databases through it. Can you think why I can not simply use calc to open a dbf file?

I found that I need to have base installed. It so it, Calc will open dbf files by clicking on them.

Thank you for this valuable piece of information. I would have thought that the ability to open dbf in Calc does not depend on the Base component.
Another reason to avoid the rather experimental Linux packages.
Nevertheless Base is the far more appropriate component to handle dbf.

Hello
Maybe special for Villeroy. I think the not complete install of OOo-base is more a problem of Ubuntu then of linux. I use a long time openSUSE and standard all parts are installed. They work in a way I expect OOo works.
I have tried and with a little knowledge it is real easy to make a server with the HSQLDB database. The same is possible for other database servers but I have not tried.
Also I think all things for text and some more are ready with a default install. I'm not sure but I think it does not matter what windows manager you choose. On this moment I have 4 window managers but use most of the time only XFCE
This is only for information to make clear that openSUSE is a good distro

I see. OpenSuse installs its office suite with batteries included. But HSQLDB is not a solution when you are confronted with DBF. There is plenty of busines software producing these bread&butter database files (in Germany at least).

Yes, to read dbf files in calc just install (if it's not installed) base.
Thank you so much.
PS.: I'm using LibreOffice now. But it's the same problem/solution. |

Again, dBase is about databases. A simple typo in Calc may change the field type so the table is no more valid in a database context. Connect a Base document with a dBase directory, edit the database data with a set of input forms, link or copy the stored data in Calc, use them with Writer for mail merges and bibliographies. But do not directly load your precious data into a spreadsheet.
