Hello OO forumers,
I hope that this is a good place to post this. If not please let me know what better venue there is.
I'm currently doing research to see what can be developed to make spreadsheet programs better tools for getting your work done. In order to better understand what should be done I'm looking to hear some of your stories about what it's like to work with spreadsheets.
I am looking for repetitive operations or error prone operations that lend themselves to automation. Specifically, operations that change the content of existing cells in spreadsheets. Examples of operations that I've had in mind include: Adding a new column to a table by pulling out a value from an already existing column. Even something as simple as automatically adding dollar signs to your cell references is something worth mentioning.
Here are some questions that I'm looking to get answers to:
What are some things that you really dread to do in Calc?
What are some things that you have to do all of the time that are tedious?
What are some things that you do all the time that are easy?
What are things that you do that are particularly error prone?
I'm looking to have a conversation about this kind of stuff, please post what you think or PM me.
Thank you! |

Nice topic. Maybe this should go in the Calc forum. Let me know if you want it moved. (A PM or reply here is good enough.) _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.3; OOo 3.4.1 on Windows Vista

Hi,
It would be good to introduce yourself.
- What are your qualifications?
- Are you looking to improve Open Source spreadsheets?
- Are you familiar with OpenOffice?
- Are you willing to participate in the QA testing or development?

If you think that this is better served in calc please feel free to move it. I was afraid that calc was for more much more concrete Q&A. I am new to these forums so put me where I belong |

Ah, very true! My name Sandro and I am a Master's Student at UIUC working on my thesis. Currently the aim of the thesis to focus on "refactorings" for spreadsheets to help automate tasks that are common or commonly erroneous.

My experience with spreadsheets is mostly from trying to support users at jobs/internships that I've had. Since most of my experience with spreadsheets has mostly involved supporting them instead of using them I'm asking the community for a bit of guidance.

Yes.

I'm not quite sure how to answer this. I use calc and have developed spreadsheets for my own use. I've been paid to help others with openoffice. So, yes?

Most definitely! The goal is to hopefully have something that I can develop for my research.
Hopefully that clears some things up. Thank you! |

I'm not sure what is policy here-- whether I should make a new thread or raise this one from the dead but I've made a video to help describe what I'm going for. Hopefully I'm not accused of practicing the blackarts if I say that the video is done with excel
