You mean you have selected Kannada in SCIM? Perhaps SCIM isn't working with OpenOffice; have you tried it with other applications? What about IBus?
You can set your keyboard to Kannada in Gnome (and KDE and presumably Unity):

| Or is there any key that is to be pressed to indicate that the text is supposed to be in that language.. I read somewhere that clicking scroll lock makes the transition from english to kannada in ms word.. Is there any such requirement in open office?? |

As I remember I think you can set keys to switch between SCIM and your desktop keyboard as you can with iBus. Which version of Ubuntu are you using? SCIM has been superseded by iBus on it for quite some time.
For iBus see:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ibus
If you do use iBus you may want/need to uninstall SCIM.
Obviously if you can use either in other applications and not OpenOffice then it is the interaction with OpenOffice that is the problem (and one I do not know how to solve other than trying the distro version if you are using a downloaded version of OpenOffice and vice versa). _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.6 on Fedora 18, LibreOffice 4.0.2 on Ubuntu 13.04 (Double Boot) |
