Way to hide the Find toolbar at the bottom, when not in use?

I know I can go up to the View/Toolbars menu, and de-select the Find toolbar each time it appears, but is there a setting to have it disappear when it is no longer in focus/being used?

I'm not sure, but you can drag it to the toolbars area at the top of the screen, and if you have enough space there, it will do no harm if it sits there, unless you want all tool buttons in one row.

I tried that, but unfortunately, once it is up on the toolbar bar (at the top of the doc), I can't use Ctrl+F to search for text. In fact, I can't simply search for text at all, I have to hit the Find and Replace function. I suppose that would still enable me to search for text, but it seems a bit awkward. If I simply want to search for text, I have to have that toolbar at teh bottom of the window.

Works for me. You have LibreOffice, and there the shortcut is different (Ctrl+H).
By the way: you should always tell right away what version of OOo is giving you a headache, that saves time.
