I defined new variables as "Number range" or "User Field" types (these are the ones I tried) in a template (.ott). So I can select them from a document that uses this template (insert-field-other, under "selction") from the template document or from a new document I create using this template.
The problem is I CANNOT see these variables on the documents that contained this template.
They appear, though, in the master document.
Anyone can shed light on this issue?

So you probably can't do that in a template.

I can do this because when I open a new document I see it works perfectly. The problem is that it does not "update" for existing documents.
I have more or less the same kind of problem when ediding the document properties. For example, with the author field: if I change the author on the document properties it does not change on the field in the document (even if I update fields - F9). This is precisly what fields are for!!
On the other hand, if I insert an author field on a new document it displays the information updated.

I think that the docinformation "Author" references to the author to the moment when the document was created and does not updates
