kstev1:

  1. You can start by reading the OpenOffice Help ( F1 ) topic: Java;setting options.

  2. The OpenOffice program needs a 32 bit version of JAVA to be 1.6, for example, 1.6.0.27

Note: it might be helpful if you include in your post(s) the version of OpenOffice ( LibreOffice ) you are using, and, your Operating System. Smile

I hope this helps, please be sure to let me / us know.

I am running windows 7 and version 3.4 OOo. I tried installing a new JRE. I installed both the 1.6 ver and the 7.1. I keep getting the error msg.The selected JRE is defective. Select another version or install a new version and select it under Tools-options-OOo-java. I removed the old versions and downloaded and installed the new version 7.1. Same msg. After closing that box I get another box saying that the connection to the data source could not be established. No java installation could be found. Crying or Very sad Help

You can download it ( Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.27 (32-bit) ) from:

http://www-web02.filehippo.com/download_jre_32/10582/

in the above, click on: Download this version 16.12 MB

  1. Install above

  2. Shut down OpenOffice and, if you are using Quickstarter on the Taskbar, shut that down too.

  3. Start OpenOffice.org

  4. From the Menu: Tools -> Options...

  5. On the left, expand OpenOffice.org

  6. Click on Java

  7. Make sure, Use a Java runtime environment has a check mark

  8. Add the directory it was installed in, on my Windows XP computer, it is:

    C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_27\jre

  9. Make sure you have selected the radio button for the above

  10. Click OK button

  11. Shut down OpenOffice

  12. Restart OpenOffice

  13. Check to see if that works with your Base file

I hope this helps, please be sure to let me / us know.

The only thing I can suggest, is you read the following posts, on the other OpenOffice forum: ( http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ ).

For example:
  1. http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=54556

  2. http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=54459
I hope this helps, please be sure to let me / us know.

Apache OpenOffice 3.4 apparently doesn't retain previous Java settings...

It's not necessary to download Java if it was previously installed on your system. But Linux-based systems exhibit slow Java database response when paired with Base (issue), so here's some links:

Perhaps try these links to Java 1.6 version 22:
Windows: Oracle Java 6u22
Linux: Sun mirror
Ubuntu: Mirror

Doesn't LibreOffice run best with OpenJDK?

If you run Linux, the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.

The situation is different for Apache OpenOffice?
