This may not be the same problem, but is at least similar. I have a spreadsheet in which the rows are months, the columns days. I wish to make a line chart to display a graph of the data for twelve months in one line (not stacked lines). I can do this; the problem occurs when I attempt to update; add another days data or edit an old cell, correcting a number. The table updates nicely, but is not reflected in the chart until I double click the chart. I need do nothing to the selected chart, just double click it. The chart updates itself nicely at that point. (I can, and often do, double click the chart before starting to enter data.) I can then move back to the table and edit/update to my hearty's content, and the chart faithfully reflects the change as soon as I move to a new cell. Until I close the spreadsheet. The next time I open this spreadsheet, I must reopen the chart to have it update as I enter data. This must somehow reestablish a link between the chart and the data table. I think. How can I make this linking permanent? Or can I? I've put the data in one long row, and in a table format (what I want). I've been chasing this problem for months, and this is the closest I've come to my problem.

I successfully used the method in my post of 6 Sept 2010 for over a year, in OOoCalc then LibO Calc.

Then, a few weeks back, probably after some update (now LibO 3.4.4) some of my charts stopped updating automatically with the new data, whereas others continued to work OK!

I can't see why, but memnosine's comment about double-clicking on the chart also fixes that new problem.
Thanks memnosine!

It would still be nice to understand & correct the problem - get back to the former behaviour - without needing to double-click every time...

I am still struggling with this & it is a real nuisance.

Summary:
Using LibO 3.4.4. in Lubuntu 11.10, many of my previously-OK charts no longer update data range when new data is inserted above a blank line which is initially included in the data range.
Method (as in 6 Sept 2010 post) : Select last data line, copy, select next line down, paste-special with shift-cells-down.
They (sometimes, but not always) update OK if I remember to double-click on the charts before inserting new data.
Simple test charts with only a few (6 / 7) lines of data do seem to update data range OK even without double-clicking.
All my usual charts (with 389 / 1529 / 4160 lines of data) fail to update data range without double-clicking.

I copied 3 of these "problem" charts back to Ubuntu 10.04LTS & opened them in OpenOfice 3.2.0. and they update perfectly every time, without any need for double-clicking or whatever.

I copied them back to LibO & they fail as usual...

Unrelated (???) I notice that these charts also fail to stay "pinned" in place in LibO - often descending many lines when reopening a document, whereas in OOo they stay where I put them...

Time for a bug report?

Or what?

Tools>OPtions>Calc>General>"Expand references when new rows are inserted"
This options should always be checked while working with lists. It can be annoying when designing a new calculation model.
The macro I linked on Fri Sep 03, 2010 10:14 pm takes care of this setting. With the cell cursor anywhere in your list you hit Ctrl+Insert and get a new list row with all references expanded plus formulas copied down from the previous row.

0pen Office.org 3.4.0 appears to have finally fixed this problem, at least for me. It's a pleasure to see the graphs update as soon as I enter new data.
