Is there a quick easy way to start page numbers on the second page and begin with page number 2.

In a nutshell: no page number on the first page, page numbering starts on the second page with page number 2.

Thanks.

Hi compaqipaq,

Simply put: you need to assign a different page style to your first page. Then insert a page number field in the header or footer of the following page(s).

Here's a way to do it:
  1. assign a different page style to your first page
    • Make sure cursor is in first page.
    • Press F11 to open the stylist, click on the 4th icon from the left = "Page Styles"
    • Double-click on First Page

  2. Place the cursor in your second page and see what page style shows in the Stylist - probably "Default"
  3. Right-click "Default" and select Modify
  4. Choose "Header" or "Footer" tab (wherever you want your page numbers) and Select Footer on then click OK.
  5. Go to the footer on that page, place the cursor inside it and insert the "Page Number" field (Insert > Fields > Page Number)

Hi, I have tried changing the page style for the first page. then I have inserted a blank page. then started a right/left page sequence. the numbering does start on the right/left pages, but it still counted the first page and second page. later I will be adding a TOC, and perhaps a preface, I was hoping to have these numbered as roman numerals or perhaps not numbered at all, then the text would start at page 1. how does one accomplish this?

Thanks!

Grrr, about your question metalsiren, I fought quite a bit to make it work also. The first time, to get the right numbering I added offsets in the numbering of the footers of the different styles. The problem is that the page numbers in the Table of Content is wrong.

To restart the numbering, you need to do a manual break : Insert -> Manual break.
Choose page break, select a different style (as in one for roman numerals and one for arabic numerals) and select change page numbers to 1. Now the new page break restart the numbering. Now you only need to add the page number field in the footer.

I noticed that it is in the documentation of manual break. Would it be possible to add it somewhere else that explains page numbering? I don't mind this way of doing things, but I do mind having so much trouble finding out how to do it...expecially since numbering is something many users use.

Though I'm still slowly discovering the fun of working with OOoWriter, my experience from other apps leaves me thinking that if you want what sounds like a cover, front matter and then content you should consider using a master document rather than trying to handle everything in one file.

Good luck!

unraveler & metalsiren,

Our man ftack usually handles this type of question but he may be sleeping or tired of repeating himself so I'll give you my best shot.

Doing Book Numbering - title page unnumbered, TOC unnumbered but reflecting correct page numbers, preface numbered with lowercase Romans, chapter one numbering starts at 1. This assumes you know how to open a header/footer and insert the Page Number field.

We will use the Default page style for the body of the book and page styles based on it for the rest.

Open the Stylist (F11), click the page icon (4th from left) and the Default style. Click the New Styles From Selection icon (2nd from right), on the Organizer tab give this new style the name “Title-TOC” but do not fool with the Next Style item which will automatically become “Title-TOC”. Move to the Page tab and set the Format item (numbering) to None then OK out.

Again with the Default style selected, create a new style named “Preface” but this time on the Page tab set the Format item to lowercase Romans and OK out.

Now double click the Title-TOC style to change your 1st page to this style, which will be reflect on the status bar at the bottom of the page. Type a title somewhere on this page and do Ctrl+Enter to force a page break.

We want to leave page 2 blank for the TOC and also change page styles for the preface so do Insert > Manual Break > Page Break, set the Style item to “Preface”, check the Change Page Number box and accept 1 by OKing out.

Use the Heading 1 paragraph style to type “Preface” and hit Enter. To quickly insert some text for your preface type “dt” followed immediately by the F3 key enough times to get to the next page.

At the end of the text on page ii we want to start a new page and change page styles again so repeat Insert > Manual Break, etc. and set the style to Default, again check Change Page Number and accept 1.

Use the Heading 1 paragraph style to type a chapter title,
hit Enter and type a bit of text.

Now move back to the top of the page reserved for your TOC and insert one. Your preface should be shown as starting on page i and your first chapter on page 1.

I would just like to say that this thread has been very helpful to me.

My dilemma: All pages needed to be numbered sequentially, but on certain pages (chapter titles) the numbering needed to be in the footer, while in the rest of the text the numbers needed to be in the header.

The above information was very helpful.

olethros,

I presume you were able to solve this with one page style for chapter title pages and another for the chapter body.

As a newbie have you discovered the Chapter field at Insert > Fields > Other > Document tab that will let you automatically reflect the current chapter title in the header/footer?

JohnV, JohnV, not sleeping but a bit less time for this forum lately. Wink Besides, James already provided a well outlined answer, and all other issues have been resolved, it seems. Glad to see Niels from Belgium here. Very Happy We already met in another OOo forum. Niels, i don't think there is need for a master doc only to handle a cover. Just create your 'Cover'page style and apply it, then Insert - manual break with change in page style and change your page number to 1 and you are set. I never used Master docs myself, although larger docs (150 + pages) can become very slow in saving. Master docs are only needed really to handle large documents, or can come in handy for docs with different sections maintained by different people.

Indeed, at first it is quite difficult to grasp page numbering in Writer, and the current help system is not very newby friendly in that respect.

HTH Smile,

That fixed my problem. Even with my carefully crafted template, I was able to do a test run, and it worked perfectly. There are a few more steps involved, but I'd much rather work with OOo than M$ Word. Thanks 8daysaweek.co.uk for your excellent help.

Page numbering now works Smile But what if I want to start a page with the number 2, will it automagically update all the other fields?

For the 1st page it works for me too perfectly, but I need to have several pages (actually the first 4) unnumbered and start with 5. And since defining more pages as 'first page' does not work (logical, I completely understand it Wink ), I hope there is some other way to perform this task.

Greetings
