|
|
I have searched for this in the writer forum and didn't see any relevant hits, but if this is something that has been posted before, please let me know.
I have OO1.1.3 on an XP Home laptop with a 1.8 Celeron and it shows 192 Ram (I'm guessing it's really 128 plus virtual).
I use OO to take notes in my classes. My professor has provided an outline that we add more information too. At this point the outline is about 60 pages or so. I have noticed that when I type, the performance is very slow. I can be typing on a line ahead of what writer is displaying. At first I attributed this to the file format I was using, but I have tried saving the file both as OO and Word with the same results. Then I thought perhaps my system is limiting it. I tried opening a new document and typing away, and OO was more than capable of keeping up with me.
The problem seems to be only on a long document. Is there some kind of option that I have checked that would be slowing me down?
Thanks |

Just a shot in the dark but you could try giving OOo more memory to work with.
Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Memory
Next to Use for OpenOffice.org make the number bigger? Again, just a guess. _________________ "Whose the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" |

| Thanks for the reply, unfortunately, it didn't seem to do much. I noticed that the CPU is maxing out (at least the taskmanager window in the systray goes to all green) when I start typing. |

| Another suggestion might be to look at your swap file settings. I never had this issue with Writer (max doc size about 170 pages and lots of objects) but I had such an issue with Impress, and I am pretty sure that it was related to increasing the minimal memory swap file size (this is Windows 2000). I have only 128 MBytes RAM and I regularly get the Win2000 message like "You minimum memory swap file size is too low. Windows is increasing ....". I therefore thought to increase the minimum swap file size, but then I have got this extremely slow response of Impress. |

| I found a work around. I installed 1.0.3 which they keep aroudn for '95 users. I use this to take my notes, and I'll use 1.1.3 for any new assignments or anything. |

Unless one really knows what one is doing (and even then!) I'd recommend leaving the swap file settings at automatic (ie Windows decides minimum and maximum) - while this is not optimum (as many tweaking guides will try to say as the swap file changes size and recommend things like setting the minimum and max to the same etc) it is by far safer given the variety of apps any user is likely to run.
If you only have 128MB you can expect slowness anyway with almost anything recently released (2005)

Sound advice! Too often people want to be the mechanic instead of learning to drive more efficiently. If at university or community college, befriend someone taking computer courses. If not, take it to a dealer. I once fixed the ball joint on an old Ford. It took me 2.5 hours. I took it into the garage to get the next one done, and it took 20 minutes with a lot less fuss and a lot less chance of a calamity. Get your machine optimised and concentrate on the courses of study [ex-teacher advice.]
