Hi

I have a problem with cross-references. I have found how to reference a figure, table or anything with a caption. However, now I would like to refer to headers, number list items, or anything with a number which is not a caption. How can I do that?

Example:
"Further details can be found in section 4."
Section 4 is a cross-reference.

Thank you
Daniel

You need to use reference fields combined with outline numbering. With outline numbering (tools -> outline numbering) you can associate an automatic numbering with a paragraph style. Then, select the text of the title and do Insert -> cross reference (or use the corresponding button in the left toolbar) In references tab, select Set Reference under Type, and give a name to your reference. Finally, press Insert. In order to insert the cross reference, reopen (if you closed it) the Fields dialog, and under Reference tab, select Insert Reference. In Selection you have all the names you puted to your references, and in Format, you can select what you want to insert: Chapter insert the number of your outline, Reference insert the text you selected... etc.

Great, it works!
Thanks

A related question:
Is there a way to define my own format. I might for instance have a format which inserts the text "Section <number> on page <page number>"

By the way... it only works for headers. What about number list items?

(I like the way FrameMaker handles this in a uniform way.)

These instructions work for manually defining references. Any chance headers can automatically be referenced? I have a fairly large document w/ many references to headers. Manually defining a reference for each header would take too long.
