Saving without extensions

I am running open office 1.1.4 on Windows XP. When I save a file in any open office apllication, the file is saved without and extensions such as .sxw or .doc so the files have no filetype. As a result, I ever have to manually add the extension or go through the open with dialogue box to re open these files. How can I fix it so open office saves files with a extension included?

In the "save" (and the "save as ... ") dialogue is a little box ("Automatic file name extension") where you can check if you want to save with extions or not (under the box for the file types and above "Save with password"). It must be checked. Is it?

Not, it wasn't. Never notice that before. I have ticked it and it all works now. Thank you for your help.
