Can/(Should?) you not convert the table to text first?
Tools > Text <-> Table
(On OOo 2.0: Table > Convert > Table to Text) _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.6 on Fedora 18, LibreOffice 4.0.2 on Ubuntu 13.04 (Double Boot)

Unfortunately, converting tables to text doesn't seem to be possible.
Using OO 1.1.4 under WinXP, regardless of whether the cursor is just beneath the table (but on the same page), or whether the table is selected, or whether the table has been double-clicked to reveal a spreadsheet, the tools<>text option is not clickable (i.e. is light grey). Why is this? |

Isn't on mine

Do you have write permissions? (It's not "read only"?) |

The document is not read-only. I could not find any read-write permissions associated with an indicivual table.
Perhaps this is relevant: I created a large OO spreadsheet, and from that, I copied several smaller sections into a seperate OO writer (.sxw) document. These sections appear as tables in the .sxw document, which I'd like to convert to text. |

If you select the part of the spreadsheet you want to convert to Writer text and Copy it (Edit>Copy or Ctrl+C), then in Writer, where you want to insert it, do Edit>Special Paste or Ctrl+Shift+V and select Unformatted text, you should end up with tab-separated text.
There seems to be a book with the section: "Converting a Spreadsheet to a Writer Table" but the information I looked at and checked out was at:

| Many thanks. This works fine, and the pasted tables happily convert into different document formats. |
