I for one would like to see true competition in office suites. If all the major suites could use the same formats, then we could really choose on merits, not "habit".

| Not likely to appear imminently, I think. MS are often as unbending in OSS incompatibility as a ruler. |

I was hoping to get a few more responses, but it seems rather clear the general consensus is that the next version of MS Office will not contain it...

Not the next one as they're busy messing up XML for that but once we have OOo 1.1.5, OOo 2.0, StarOffice, KOffice 1.whateveritis, Abiword and Lotus Workplace using OpenDocument which will be an ISO standard then they would proabably give in.
Perhaps I overestimate them as their software by default uses non-ISO approved units of measure and paper size and never works completely properly for ISO standards.
