Huh? My impression was that OOo 2 and SO8 would use the same MS Office import filters. It is true that SO8 is better at handling MSO tables, headers and footers? Even macros???

It's just the filters I think. The reason is that being a closed produce they can have closed code for the filters. Code that I think is bought from MS. That doesn't seem like an advantage to me.

Quite a few visitors/members here really want and need max compatibility. I really thought that filters were the same. Oh well, I will probably upgrade my StarOffice 7 to 8, to get the "commercial quality" spell checker.

I suppose I should explain my reasoning for it being bad that it has better file filters:
You would be paying money to Sun, who in turn would be paying money to M$ so that you can join the format lock-in. That's not a good thing and why bother when OpenDocument is going to wipe it out?

If I can acquire multiple packages from different vendors that can exchange files without loss of content, then how is this a Lockin?

If they bought some code from Microsoft, will it work on the Linux and Mac versions of StarOffice? The StarOffice 7 WordPerfect filter was/is Windows only, I think.

Money is being paid to one company for that: Microsoft. None of Microsofts formats are openly specified so none of them are standards meaning that if you use them you will always be partically locked in.

Well, I think the question that Kaaredyret asks get to a possible problem. If the functionality is only on Windows then for sure there is at least a partial lockin.
9point9, I appreciate your opinion and I can even go along with some of it. But for me the big picture is in helping to promote an evironment where the output of these systems can be exchanged with other systems, simply and freely. This way when all is said and done a person or organization can have a real choice.That choice doesn't have to, perhaps even could never, include every possible software application available. But if the choices available are kept broader then, ONE, then that is a good thing. The larger the pool of vialble choices the better.
Just my opinion.

| The average Joe doesnt care about these discussions about open or closed, they want solutions that works. Some may be interested, but I would pay go get around the problems if I exchanged docs with MS using people. |
